IWM’s Clients Win Two MBA Waste Awards in 2017

Instant Waste Management are excited to announce our involvement with our waste award-winning clients, Arklen Developments and PACT Construction. Earlier this year, Arklen Developments won the (MBA) Master Builders Associations’ Residential Award for Excellence in Recycling for their South Fremantle project in Scott Street which also won the Innovative Construction on a Small Lot Award.

Our team at IWM provided the waste removal services on the site. To overcome the challenges of the site size and its tight access, we sorted all waste “offsite” at our Material Recovery Facility. The project proved complex because the site didn’t have a wide enough frontage to separate the construction waste into different coloured bins. Providing our commingled recycling bins and sorting the waste offsite at our Material Recovery Facility created a better avenue of recycling support for the project.

PACT Construction won the Master Builders Association’s Commercial Award for Excellence in Waste Management on 22nd July 2017. PACT Construction was awarded the MBA’s Smart Waste Award for the second year in a row. This time around, for their Excellence in Waste Management on a Commercial Project for an amazing  96% recycling rate & they also won the Energy Efficiency Award on the Mills Park Community Facility – City of Gosnells. 

IWM appointed as the projects’ Waste Consultant for the City of Gosnells back in August 2013, by Nic Preston of Hodge Collard Preston Architects. Not only did we provide the waste recycling services during the project, but also the consultancy services alongside the ESD consultant Michael Thompson of AECOM prior to any construction & demolition actually taking place. This involved guiding the demolition contractors, civils contractors and the building’s main contractor on the logistical requirement for waste during the various programmed stages of the project. As well as providing detailed waste reporting requirements during the build, using our bespoke waste reports as a benchmark against the (GBCA) Green Building Council of Australia’s, Public Buildings Design v1 accreditation tool, with its high recycling targets, set during and after the construction stages.

During the very early design stages, we reviewed the methods of managing and reporting waste diversion on four stages of the project’s schedule of works.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we achieved:

  • Prior to Demolition, IWM visited the site and provided the City of Gosnells’ Tender Briefing to potential contractors, as it was important that, the City achieved maximum compliancy with the GBCA’s environmental targets on recycling.
  • Servicing Ertech scope, during their Civil and earthworks stages, prior to construction on site. IWM provided services with a >90% recycling rate using Green Building Council of Australia conversion factors in the waste reports.
  • IWM hit a high 96% recycling rate by working closely with PACT Construction throughout the major construction stages.  With workshops & tours of our Material Recovery Facility by the PACT project team.
  • We attended the site with Green Building Council of Australia to speak with the council’s own Facility Management and Operational team leader. Conducted a review after the project’s Practical Completion, during the handover of the site to the Operational waste stage.

As a result, our customer won the commercial waste excellence award for thinking outside the box and by using our services. The project hit a high 96% recycling rate away from landfill, which was an exceptional outcome. The project also received an international acclaim for being “World Best Practice” as a Six Green Star rated building partly because of these high recycling rates.
