Tips for low-waste Christmas events

With Christmas around the corner, many of us are planning annual events to celebrate. Christmas events often produce unnecessary amounts of waste that have devastating effects on our environment. This Christmas, why not plan and run a low-waste event following the simple tips and ideas we have provided below.
- Electronic Invites
Paper print invites often end up in the bin, so why not swap them for electronic invites? There are various free platforms you can use to spruce up your invitations including, Canva, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word. Electronic invites also lower costs.
2. Buy and cook only what is needed
We tend to overbuy during the Christmas period. Therefore, buying what is necessary will ensure food will not go to waste. To ensure food doesn’t go to waste this year, start by having your guests RSVP. This will give you an idea of how much food to buy and cook. If you find you have already purchased too much food, try freezing.
3. Leftover/Scrap food
There are often leftover food and scraps after Christmas events which often end up in the bin. Consider alternative ways to make the most of food leftovers, such as, composting scraps, packing leftovers for your loved ones, feeding a pet and donating food to those in need.

Loads of reusable materials can be incorporated into your wrapping and decorations to avoid buying unnecessary materials. You can find DIY ideas online on Google, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook.
6. Homemade gifts
Gift shopping can often be overwhelming and time consuming. Personalise your gifts this year by making them yourself. There are many ideas for easy and sustainable gifts on platforms such as Google, Pinterest and Instagram. Some ideas may include soy candles, plants and jewellery.
