How to Discourage Others from Using Your Skip Bin
1. Cover the Bin
A bin cover will often deter others from disposing their waste into your hired skip bin. Many “illegal dumpers” don’t think they are doing anything wrong when they see an empty bin on site. As a result, a covered bin will often discourage an offender from using your bin. Materials that you can use as a bin cover could include tarpaulin or plastic sheet that is tied or weighed down.
2. Visible Security Cameras on Site
For established sites, clearly visible security cameras will often discourage serial offenders. New estates often have installed street cameras. If the camera does not discourage a dumper, video footage could still be used to prosecute the offender.
3. Appropriate Placement of your bin
When hiring a skip bin, give some thought as to the bin placement to make it harder for the “illegal dumper”, such as keeping the bin away from the verge or have it placed near lighting.
4. Amount of time bin stays on site
Another potential tip to reduce the possibility of illegal dumping is to get the bin “in and out” as quickly as possible. It’s a good idea to schedule your bin delivery when you will be available to fill it. By leaving an empty skip bin on site for a few days gives “illegal dumpers” the opportunity to scout for an empty bin to fill.
Who to call if someone has filled your bin
1. Pollution Watch
If you find illegal rubbish in your skip bin you may wish to directly report the issue to Pollution Watch on their hotline 13200 784 782. Evidence from security cameras and the actual rubbish in the bin may assist in catching the offenders. Pollution Watch may assist by getting in touch with the individual to remove their waste from your bin and/or issuing them a fine.
2. Contact your local council
Waste illegally dumped on your property (i.e., not your bin) may be the responsibility of the council. You may wish to contact the council to see if they will attend to remove the dumped waste on your property.
